- Infrastructure Ownership: running in your cloud account provides direct access to core enterprise capabilities including your-account backups, compliance, and monitoring—with these features included by default.
- Fully managed solutions can effectively work inside customer-controlled cloud accounts while providing the same experience, and SLA's. We're confident users would opt for this approach when given the choice. Best of (self-hosted + managed) = BYOC.
- The long-term vision is to build a cross-database data platform (including in-memory, OLAP, Postgres, etc.) that exclusively offers BYOC for everyone. Like Aiven, but focused on BYOC.
- Before we earn the right to be a BYOC database platform, we should first achieve PMF in one database market. Our bet is to start with ClickHouse, as it's a growing OLAP market.
- While most current database providers offer BYOC options, these are often poorly supported afterthoughts that require expensive enterprise-level commitments. This situation is likely to persist since BYOC conflicts with their standard offerings.
- We believe additional competitive advantages can be built in the BYOC layer itself around observability, control and trust that won't be easy for all database providers to just replicate in their own BYOC offerings.
